There are lots of exciting bike things going on this week: it’s UNSW Enviro Week!

Weekly bike workshops
Wednesday 12-2pm on the Quadrangle Lawn
Is your bike in need of some tuning, or a complete overhaul? Bring it along to the bike workshop and we’ll show you how to do it.

Learn-to-Ride (for complete beginners)
Wednesday 2-4pm on the Physics Lawn
Are you a complete bike beginner, or know someone who is? Want to discover the joys of two-wheeled transport? We’ll take you through those first steps towards bike-powered fun.

Food Co-op Crawl
Friday 9am-6pm, leaving from UNSW Thoughtful Foods at 10am (more info here)
Looking for a relaxing day of cycling, food and more food? We need 5 people who are moderately experienced riding on roads. Let me know if you can make it (christophermoore aaattt gmail.com) or just turn up on the morning.

The UNSW Bike Club is launching its Bike Buddy program! The idea is that people who already ride to UNSW can be found by people who live nearby, and lack confidence or a good route. They meet up, ride to uni together, and voila! one more commuter to UNSW!

Hey everyone,

Bike workshops will start next week (12/03)! They’re still on Wednesdays, but they’re now from 1pm-3pm. That’s two whole hours of bike-fixing goodness! Bring your bike to the Quad Lawn, and we’ll teach you how to fix it and maintain it!

We had our first bike race on Friday 23rd November. It was hard-fought but there were no casualties. The results were:

Congratulations everyone, UNSW Bike Club has won the Arc award for Club Of The Year! Maurice deserves enormous praise for starting this club, and big thanks go to Alice, Nicola, and all our recent workshop attendees. Here’s to a new year and the promise of new premises!

Today’s workshop was the last for this semester, but I’ll be on campus for most of the holidays - just send me an email if you’ve got a bike question. We’ll probably be organising a ride after exams, but I’ll post any activities over the email list

Wednesday the 17th of October is Ride To Work Day, and UNSW Bike Club will be running events to promote cycling as alternative transport for students and staff.

There will be a “bike bus” from Central Station. Meet at the Eddy Ave bus stop, at 8:15am for an 8:30am start. An experienced cyclist (Maurice) will be leading the group. There’s safety in numbers! We’re also looking at organising other bike buses, such as one from the Inner West. If you’re interested, please contact me (see below).

There will also be a free hearty breakfast for everyone who cycles on the day. It will be in front of the Library from 9am to 11am.

Please circulate this as widely as you can! We’re looking to get heaps of cyclists riding to UNSW.

Need a bike? Got some time to volunteer? The UNSW bike club is always getting its hands on unwanted bikes and has the tools and the skills to get them working. However, we need something to do with the bikes and we need some help in everyday bike club stuff. So we’re introducing Earn-a-Bike!

How does it work? Simple. Come and ‘buy’ a bike for $50. Then volunteer 6 hours and get your $50 back. You don’t have to know how to fix bikes to volunteer, we need help with setting up and packing up the Tuesday (1-2) and Wednesday (12-2) workshops. If you’d like to volunteer on Tuesday contact Maurice (solarpoweredmaurice@gmail.com), or for Wednesday contact Chris (christophermoore@gmail.com).

We have a bike club flyer! There will be a stack of these in the Quad workshop for you to pick up and distribute to all the cyclists you see on campus. See if you can get them while they’re moving!

In Week 7 (3rd-7th September) the UNSW Environment Collective will be running Enviro Week, and the UNSW Bike Club has been invited to participate. I thought I’d run a workshop I’ve been thinking about for a while, which is teaching people who are total beginners how to ride a bike. I’ll be running the workshop from 2pm on the Thursday (6th September), meeting on the Quad Lawn to go somewhere more quiet. I thought maybe if we had enough bikes fixed up we could promise people a free bike. If you’re interested in helping out please email me (christophermoore at gmail dot com).
